A few quick hits of stuff circling around the Net:
- Magician Rob Lake’s veil of secrecy is partly revealed in this story from the Oklahoman. People who work on his shows sign a strict secrecy agreement, yet still aren’t allowed to see complete contraptions. They aren’t taught secrets to the illusions; only cues needed to keep the show going.
- Ellusionist Forum moderator Goudinov sent this story our way this morning; since then, it’s everywhere. In a sad, real-world example of how the current economic recession is hitting home, CNN tells the story of Vegas magician David Shimshi, who was featured in America’s Got Talent and was the house magician at the Mirage. Now, he’s playing Mr. Mom while his wife works as a caterer. His wife had invested in a Smoothie King franchise, but that went under.
- While we’re talking about the economy, John Hodgeman appeared on The Daily Show with John Stewart to talk about how he would fix the economy. In addition to instituting Emergency Christmas and a new currency based off of national hero Capt. C.B. “Sully” Sullenberger, Hodgeman proposes that a popular magician take over as Secretary of the Treasury. Enjoy the vid:
- And while we’re talking about U.S. current events, the below video featuring a Japanese blackfaced Obama magician is generating a fair amount of blogbuzz. iTricks.com says the headline explains it all, Jossip.com is reminded of the movie “Lost in Translation” and Videogum says the video takes a fair amount of lustre from the newly-elected president. If bloggers are going crazy, the rest of the media is sure to follow. Some already call Obama a magician.
