Magician wins IBM contest without his usual arsenal

While Jason, Eric, Peter and the rest of the crowd were busy meeting with customers and fans during the IBM’s 83rd annual international convention in Dallas, another magician was busy winning a contest without his usual bag of tricks.

Will Fern, a close-up magician from Somerset, N.J., was named an international champion for strolling magic last week. Here’s the best part: He didn’t plan on competing. He just went with what he had in his pockets.

“I wasn’t planning on competing, so I didn’t have any of my best close up tricks with me,” Fern said in a press release. “My friend and fellow magician John George challenged me to compete in the Strolling Olympics, so armed only with a deck of cards and four silver dollars, off I went.”

It worked out. Fern, 47, impressed a room with 100 tables full of magicians from about 40 countries. Talk about making the most of what you have with you.

Fern has been performing for about 20 years working restaurants, corporate gigs and private shows.
