Legendary magician and skeptic James Randi has publicly announced a secret he has hidden for about 70 years, and he credits acceptance from society as the reason for his announcement.
We’ll let his words, posted on his blog Sunday, do the reporting:
“Well, here goes. I really resent the term, but I use it because it’s recognized and accepted. I’m gay. From some seventy years of personal experience, I can tell you that there’s not much “gay” about being homosexual. For the first twenty years of my life, I had to live in the shadows, in a culture that was — at least outwardly — totally hostile to any hint of that variation of life-style … Gradually, the general attitude that I’d perceived around me began to change, and presently I find that there has emerged a distinctly healthy acceptance of different social styles of living.”
His entire post about it, including what nudged him toward making his announcement, can be found on the Web site for the James Randi Educational Foundation. We don’t care about politics at Ellusionist, we only care about people. Though we applaud his courage for making the announcement, it doesn’t change our opinion of him: He’s one of the greatest of all time.
