Bright idea: New cardstock features self-luminating technology

April 1st, 2011 | Jason Brumbalow | Filed Under General

After 2+ years of intense research, it’s ready. Working in conjunction with the U.S. Playing Card Co. and top electronics engineers, we have developed the first ever self-illuminating deck. Each one of these cards uses superslim LED technology to light itself. Yep, the first deck of card’s to light up when manipulated.

´╗┐We’re not talking about reaction to blacklight. We’re not talking about glow-in-the-dark ink. We’re talking ACTUAL ELECTRIC LIGHT at your fingertips.

Enter the Tesla Deck.

Bright idea: New cardstock features self luminating technology

The Tesla deck is based off the studies of the enigmatic inventor Nikola Tesla, whose work with alternating current electricity gave Thomas Edison a run for his money. Using his work, we developed a cardstock embedded with nanotechnology that will blind you with its brilliance. It has the lumens of an iPhone.

No batteries needed. Each card comes equipped with lithium ion receptors that capture the static electricity generated from the friction of the cards sliding against each other. Every fan, every Hot Shot Cut, every double lift, every Sybil, every move gives you juice. Imagine the charge you’ll get from shulling.

This is a historic breakthrough and Ellusionist has the first prototype deck in hand. We shot a video of us using it last night and it was nothing less than spectacular.

We can’t show you the full deck just yet. But you get an idea of how it works as we filmed it lighting up in the dark.

While this technology will not be available for some time commercially, you can get a quick idea of how the works from the video below.

    April Fools dude.

  3. Video?

  4. Imagine if it were real! The creativity! I think, and this is just my opinion, that it is actually possible, maybe 2 or 3 years from now, but possible nonetheless…

  5. is it april fools? hehe =)

  6. Well played sir.

  7. just like google did, google motion, haha, that google motion caught me.

  8. ZedFontaine on:

Nice one Jason, very nice indeed.

I cant wait for these to come out, I mean, to be able to actually program the cards! Amazing!

    *cough*

  9. so is the whole thing fake??

  10. so its all fake??

  14. Jason Brumbalow on:

Imagine trying to edit it, and post it, listening over and over…… I don’t have enough towels here to clean up the blood coming out of my eardrums.

  15. That was worse than Dynamo’s Rick-Roll this morning!

  16. At first I was like “Ohmahgawd these are gonna be sweet.”

  21. George Waldman on:

It would be totally awesome if you guys said, “We may have done this just as an April Fool’s Joke, but now, let’s see if we can actually DO this FOR REAL.” I had not seen the Rebecca Black “Friday” video yet, but after watching the video and hearing her sing, I would like to thank you for providing it on this most appropriate day because not only is it April 1, but it’s also Friday. I enjoyed this video and her singing.

  22. daniel sacchetto on:

hahahahahahahaha!!!!, very cool, completly fell for it, but still an led deck would be awsome for night performances, hope we can have something like that soon

  23. I knew it was an April Fool’s Day thing as soon as I saw it, but really “Friday”? You’ve gone too far my friends… too far.

But for the record I love that you called it the Tesla Deck after that crazy, pigeon loving, earthquake machine making, genius.

  24. You guys should release the new R Black deck!

  25. The Mad Hatter on:

I love that song. Also even though this is fake, it got me thinking science and its not completely impossible. The nonsense explanation given may not be possible but they make Piezo film, so you use that in place of card stock and laminate them with Transparent LED Film and bam there you go a deck of cards that lights up when manipulated. Of course a deck would cost several thousand dollars. But its still possible.

  26. I was so stoked when I saw it on Facebook.
then i let out the biggest sigh of disappointment.

    thanks ellusionist -_-

  27. Leandro Balmaceda on:

  28. Dammit – you got me! They would be seriously cool though, you should look into it! :)

  29. Good one!
but seriously? Rebecca Black? you should have just gone with the standard rick roll that’s at least bearable.

  30. Logan Brown on:

    gullibility is curiosity’s retarded cousin.

  31. Jerry Foster on:

You made me laugh on that one.

  32. Case Takata on:

    Its all a lie :(
    BUT IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES!!!

  33. Terry Rowley on:

*sigh* Ok Im going to start reserching teslas crap now. See if these are even possible. Cause they would be so fing steampunk lol…

  34. Terry Rowley on:

Imagine the charge youll get from shulling ROFL>….Id love to shulle these cards some =)

  35. Mike Anderson on:

Ahhhh. That song makes me want to take a .45cal Pill.

  36. April Fool’s day aside: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/11/the-illustrated-man-how-led-tattoos-could-change-the-face-of-humanity/

The technology to make illuminated cards, paper & even tattoos is very much underdevelopment…

  37. Well played E, well played.

  38. wow the song pissed me off what the ?? !

  39. Well, T11 and D&D ate you alive.

  40. I am laffing. Really laffing. I approve. You got me good Ellusionist!

  41. So… all this are fake…

  42. It’d be about $12000 per deck I’d say.

  43. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh my ears

  44. Your taste in music sucks!

  45. Jason Brumbalow on:

    Shadow, that’s the joke. ;)

  46. Teja-Jae Boocock on:

haha, ahhhh — god damn it.
    well played ellusionist… well played… ;)

  47. Nathan Nokes on:

I kinda figured it was too good to be true, but imagine the reveals for like night street magic…have some really cool ideas already and they don’t even exist. :(

  48. The Other Rich Sanders on:

OMG, is there a sillier song, a more mind-numbing video on the entire planet than that junior-high final project? lol

I particularly love the name though…when something even remotely capable of being this kind of deck is developed someday, TESLA is bound to raise an eyebrow from the vast beyond and think “yep, that’s what I was talkin’ ’bout – magic!”
