The FOX News Network is calling out David Blaine for standing up. A photographer for the network snapped the above pic of Blaine not hanging upside down. The network’s front page features the above photo with the word “Cheater.”
Blaine’s representatives have responded that he never intended to hang for 60 consecutive hours:
“About once an hour he has to come down for a medical check, to stretch, and to relieve himself, because even David Blaine can’t do that upside down,” said Patrick Smith, an executive vice president at Rubenstein Associates. “He has said all along that there will be times when he must get his head above his heart…The doctors told him if he doesn’t do that, he will die.” (emphasis added)
According to the official press release from ABC, Blaine was expected to pull himself up. From the release:
For more than 60 spellbinding hours, Blaine will be on the wire without food. He will pull himself up to drink liquids and to restore circulation. (emphasis added) He will need to fight off muscle spasms and lack of sleep, as well as maintain maximum concentration in order to be successful. He will have to hang on for his life, even sleeping by dangling upside down.
To be fair, the press release also said he would walk on a wire in electromagnetic boots, and there hasn’t been much of that yet. But FOX overlooked that. Instead, they took a picture of him standing without specifying how long he stood there, and accused him of breaking a promise he never made. Let’s put it this way: I work for a major daily newspaper in Southwest Missouri. If I wrote a gaff like that, I would get a stern talking-to from my editor.
Some have speculated that the NBC network hates magic, because magicians get bad treatment on “America’s Got Talent.” But when it comes to magic, no one hates it more than FOX, which aired that Masked Magician special. It was also a FOX affiliate that called out Criss Angel during his recent building escape.
But we’ll leave official judgment on this matter to those who are actually there. If you’re in Central Park, let us know how long Blaine stands, compared to how long he hangs. We’re betting it’s not long.
