FOX News: Blaine cheating?

The FOX News Network is calling out David Blaine for standing up. A photographer for the network snapped the above pic of Blaine not hanging upside down. The network’s front page features the above photo with the word “Cheater.”

Blaine’s representatives have responded that he never intended to hang for 60 consecutive hours:

“About once an hour he has to come down for a medical check, to stretch, and to relieve himself, because even David Blaine can’t do that upside down,” said Patrick Smith, an executive vice president at Rubenstein Associates. “He has said all along that there will be times when he must get his head above his heart…The doctors told him if he doesn’t do that, he will die.” (emphasis added)

According to the official press release from ABC, Blaine was expected to pull himself up. From the release:

For more than 60 spellbinding hours, Blaine will be on the wire without food. He will pull himself up to drink liquids and to restore circulation. (emphasis added) He will need to fight off muscle spasms and lack of sleep, as well as maintain maximum concentration in order to be successful. He will have to hang on for his life, even sleeping by dangling upside down.

To be fair, the press release also said he would walk on a wire in electromagnetic boots, and there hasn’t been much of that yet. But FOX overlooked that. Instead, they took a picture of him standing without specifying how long he stood there, and accused him of breaking a promise he never made. Let’s put it this way: I work for a major daily newspaper in Southwest Missouri. If I wrote a gaff like that, I would get a stern talking-to from my editor.

Some have speculated that the NBC network hates magic, because magicians get bad treatment on “America’s Got Talent.” But when it comes to magic, no one hates it more than FOX, which aired that Masked Magician special. It was also a FOX affiliate that called out Criss Angel during his recent building escape.

But we’ll leave official judgment on this matter to those who are actually there. If you’re in Central Park, let us know how long Blaine stands, compared to how long he hangs. We’re betting it’s not long.

Discuss it in this Ellusionist forum thread.

  1. well i was there earlier today for about 2 hours or less and i managed to snap multiple pictures of Blaine standing on his platform on 5 different occasions for at least 10 minutes straight. I have pictures of him up there talking on his phone, making jokes to the staff up there and hamming up to the audience. i felt as though he was taking a break than immediately doing an interview so that he was fresh for it, and in his interviews he mentioned nothing about himself taking breaks

  2. Now this is totally ridiculous. Now Fox is all snobby. I mean come on guys, he been in many death situations, but this is friggin crazy. Go david go!

  3. That’s stupid. FOX is stupid. There’s no way that anyone can stay upside down for 60 straight hours. I figured that he would need to take a break.

  4. Blaine’s stunt underwhelms some, inspires others | Ellusionist Magic News on:

[...] not going as far as FOX’s cheating charge, several are not impressed with Blaine’s hourly breaks from hanging upside down. The New York [...]

  5. Why is everyone bashing David Blaine so much? I’ve seen his magic and he is absolutely the best. After seeing David’s magic up-colse and personally, then watching Chris Angel, I feel that Chris Angel is not so convincing. If we’re ging to use the word “fake” I would apply it to Chrisbecause he dow not convince me. Watch teir magic back to back again and see. As far as David’s stunts, he chooses the most impossible to do. He is human, and of course he is not suicidal, he pushes his body to the limit of endurance and does something no one has done before and he is attacked so agressively. He does wnhat he wants to do if you care to watch, watch if not at tleast appreciate that he is pushing himself to acomplish the goals he ahs set fo himself,a nd it is not at the expensse of others, He is a great talent and I wish him all the best and hope to see him on TV doing his magic very soon!

  6. I appologize for the typos. I did not realize that my keys are sticking!
