Brad Christian: Your sleights mean nothing

Brad Christian: Your sleights mean nothingConsider this a late Christmas present. Remember the letter and video Brad Christian sent out on Christmas? We’re happy to show you round two.

And this one is dedicated to the movemonkeys. Yeah, you. We see your well done invisible pass in your videos, but we don’t see your face. We don’t hear your voice. In this vid, Brad explains why mechanics will always be trumped by presentation, and talks a little bit about how to make a presentation engaging, realistic and relevant. Enjoy.

  2. Looks unrehearsed…anyway…good points…but I also think moves are important…it´s a delight for a spectator to see visual magic…before, during and after the trick…flourishes help accomplish that…

  7. Funny fact is, I know exactly what he means by “relate the story”, in my drawing class we talked about the “golden face” and how it in itself was perfect yet people felt it wasn’t cause they couldn’t relate to it.

  8. TBH, I’d rather skim through a text transcript, but I’m pretty sure I agree with him nonetheless.

Moves are backstage (let’s hope). IMO, a good magician can make the ball and vase look magical.

In the past decade or so there has been this overwrought and somewhat constipated notion that magic must have “meaning”.

I disagree with that. Cool and magical are enough for me.

Leaving the backstage view aside, is cool and magical what the viewers see?

  9. OK, I’ve watched the video and I think Brad C’s suggestions would apply to people who present magic with a narrative, assuming that other people live in a narrative world.

What if the people so gently accosted by the well-meaning magician try live at some remove from the narrative cages of our days?

At this stage of the game, Lao-tzu has already left town decades or centuries ago to get away from people with narratives in their heads.

“I put a Godiva chocolate bar, and now it is ten goldfish” — this is a break from everyday reality.

  10. Further, I meant to include Fuji Akira’s cigarette through cigarette as an example for my rebuttal to both narrative and meaning.

It’s just cool and magical, isn’t it?

  11. Executive summary: Magic occurs in the water of attention.

Color it if you must, but don’t clutter it.

  13. I agree with Brad 100%. I am a beginner so the fancy flourishes aren’t in my domain yet, and I can get pretty good reactions just by adjusting my patter to the audience – I like saying to my girl that i know her so well I can easily read her body language (and find out her card).

  14. Fantastic Brad !

  15. i want to know about the floating of card in the air

  16. hi brad”, you are my idol,, please continue making a video and we will do the rest,,,,

Everything composed made a great deal of sense. But, what about this? what if you added a little content? I mean, I don’t wish to tell you how to run your blog, however what if you added something that grabbed folk’s attention? I mean Online Magic News – Ellusionist Street Magic Blog » Blog Archive » Brad Christian: Your sleights mean nothing is kinda boring. You might glance at Yahoo’s front page and see how they create post titles to grab viewers interested. You might add a video or a related pic or two to grab people interested about everything’ve got to say. In my opinion, it could make your website a little bit more interesting.
