Uncut sheets return with Cyber Monday, along with 15% discount

Monday, November 26th, 2012

Most people see decks of cards in small boxes. The printing process behind cards is largely unknown to the general public. That’s why the sight of an uncut sheet is, in a word, stunning.

But to a magician or lover of cards, an uncut sheet means so much more.

A card mechanic appreciates the strange symmetry and scattering of pips and court cards much more than a normal game fan. And ever since we started this modern craze of custom playing cards, uncut sheets of our decks have become even more in demand.

Our uncut sheets of our signature playing cards have returned as part of our Cyber Monday special, which includes:

  • ~ Uncut sheets starting from $20.
  • ~ 15 percent storewide discount (What’s that? You’re a Black Club member? Make that 20 percent).
  • ~ In addition to our holiday gift tiers, we’ll randomly give out free gifts for all orders over $25. Some of the gifts include Pure Smoke, Gecko signed by creator Jim Rosenbaum, decks of Fathom and Sultan Republic playing cards, Infusion, Bullet, De-Ring, Glass and more.
  • ~ U.S. residents can use PayPal Bill-Me-Later.
  • ~ Black Club members can pick up extra copies of the new, members-exclusive Black Club deck. Limit two decks per member.

These uncut sheets are no posters — these are the real thing, pulled off the presses of the U.S. Playing Card Company right before getting cut into decks. Measuring 22-by-26 3/8 inches, these sheets are suitable for framing, displaying either the backs or the faces.

Uncut sheets start at $25, depending on the deck selected. Heads up: Sheets aren’t available for all of our decks and are subject to availability. And sheets for our rare, collectible decks are available only to Black Club members.

Hundreds pick up Sultan’s Treasury; meet the guy who found it first

Monday, November 19th, 2012

The heat was unbearable, the terrain was unforgiving. But Jon Lanenga didn’t care. He bravely adventured through Jordan and to the city of Petra, a long-standing archaeological city famous for its umpteen appearances in movies, tourism reputation and rock-cut architecture. He followed the secret instructions in the Sultan Republic deck: He snuck past the tourist area in Al Khazneh, found the hidden button on the statue, followed the staircase up to the top of the plateau and dug like his life depended on it. Soon, he heard the sound of approaching security officers, so he reached into his satchel, and…

OK, it didn’t happen anything like that. But Jon Lanenga was the first to discover the secret of the Sultan Republic deck.

Hidden in plain sight, he discovered the Treasury.

The first release window of the Sultan Treasury deck has closed: The first 2,500 have been sold. We’ll release more once every whenever-we-feel-like-it. The secret to finding where to buy it was a link to the Sultan Treasury edition — a limited edition deck that, like other rare Ellusionist decks, was printed in a run of 5,000. Lanenga kept track of the || DECIPHER || images on our Facebook page, translated it to find a secret code inside each Sultan Republic box, put that at the end of an URL and found the link to buy the deck.

Lanenga works communications in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in California (one of the reasons he immediately recognized the code as coordinates). He got into magic as a kid — as he was cleaning the garage with his father one day, he found an old magic kit that his dad won at a party. He got a reprieve from cleaning to explore that kit, and took to the newly discovered art. His father, owner of a chocolate store, let him perform at factory parties.

When he joined the Air Force about eight years ago, he discovered Ellusionist. He was involved in a fundraiser we held, Tricks for Troops, to deliver magic supplies to U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan. He has performed for people around the world, including teenagers in New York and troops in Afghanistan. “It was a way to take away the stresses and worries of war and bring them to a place where magic was real,” Lanenga said. “It helped a lot and I had some great performances while waiting for the phone to call home.”

Hundreds of you figured out the Sultan’s Riddle and got a chance to snag a few of the decks from the initial sales release of 2,500. But someone had to be first. Lanenga figured it out and earned a place of honor that no one can take away.

THE EVENT: New products, features loaded into first phase of redesign

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

Welcome to the Event.

A year in the making, the Event is a redesigning of our website and the announcement of some incredible new releases. Today is the first phase, which includes:

    • ~ Fathom playing cards. For years customers have asked us for some sort of deck that features the four basic elements. But instead of cramming all of them into one deck, we found enough inspiration to give each element its own tribute.Fathom is the first in our Origin series. Printed on the finest stock available from U.S. Playing Card Co. with our Performance Coating, Fathom features a beautiful blue theme, from the ace and joker to the custom pips. Every body of water, from a creek to an ocean, is filled with mystery. What lies beneath the surface of the water? Dive into the depths of your skills and creativity. Discover what lies beneath.

The next 48 hours is a pre-release of the deck. They will go offline after that, until their official release on Nov. 23.

    • ~ Welcome aboard, Daniel Madison. One of the underground’s biggest legends, Madison has gone from card cheat to a respected developer and expert card mechanic. He appeared on “Penn and Teller: Fool Us!” and did a routine that floored the duo immensely — more so had they been fooled. He joins Ellusionist’s creative team, so you will be seeing much more from him. Your spectators are in for it. Oh, and be sure to join in a live chat with him at 8 p.m. Friday EST.
    • ~ Halo wrist bands. A new innovation from Ellusionist, this band will give a glow to your dark-room performances. We know many of you perform at night, whether it’s out in the streets or inside a jumpin’ juke joint. Add a bit of glow to your style. You’ll find it handy for providing just a bit of cover, a la Arm Band, or as an assistant for tricks such as Entrapment.
    • ~ Gift Certificates. Another long-standing request of our customers (and our customer’s girlfriends), our gift certificates are a perfect way to give someone a little magic, no matter what the occasion.
    • ~ Free LTD decks. Over the next 48 hours, every order over $50 with shippable items will include one of our gorgeous LTD decks. One per customer.
    • ~ New website features. As you explore, you’ll notice the product pages are more streamlined and organized. The product pages also include a new notification system. If something is out of stock, you can opt to receive an e-mail the second it’s back on our shelves.

The next phase includes our epic holiday giveaway, a new system of customer rewards and more swag. The Event is only the beginning.

Artist Interviews: Wayne Houchin featured on new magic cable series

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

Visit for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Wayne Houchin played with electricity before David Blaine was electrified.

It was in preparation for a segment on “Breaking Magic,” a new nine-episode series debuting on Discovery Channel Sunday. Wearing the same type of Faraday suit, Houchin got to see firsthand how powerful, and terrifying, Tesla coils could be. Fortunately, he didn’t have to stay in the suit for three days, like Blaine.

Houchin, a consultant for Criss Angel and creator of Stigmata, Indecent, Control and many other effects, has spent the last several months traveling and performing. Part of those performances were for the new show, developed by the same British company behind Derren Brown’s series. He, James Galea, Billy Kidd and Ben Hamlin travel the globe in “Breaking Magic” and put a magical spin on scientific principles.

He took the time to talk to us more about the show, about how hard cable networks are looking for magic shows, the challenges behind presenting science as magic and exactly what it was like to be near those Tesla coils.

“Breaking Magic” airs at 10 p.m. Eastern on Sunday on the Discovery Channel, and runs for nine weeks.
