Reporter: Barry will be back in Vegas

Friday, January 30th, 2009

There’s an interesting line in this story about Keith Barry’s ban from Irish casinos, originally spotted by Dodd Vickers of the Magic Newswire. The last line of the report from The Dublin Herald:

But despite his gambling ban Keith will return to Las Vegas this May for an extended run of his hit show.

Figures… that’s all the info in the report. We don’t know if it will be with Planet Hollywood, and nothing is said about the possibility of a TV show. But he’s coming back. Whether he’ll be able to hit the blackjack tables is another story…

Props to Justin Robert Young of iTricks for putting the original 2+2 together.

Brock Gill offers halftime show on Super Bowl Sunday

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Magician Brock Gill realizes that Bruce Springsteen might not be everyone’s favorite thing in the world. If you need a magic break during halftime of the big game, Gill will be hosting a halftime show of his own. From his blog:

Maybe I should take this time to clear up any rumors. I am not doing THE halftime show on TV. I think they gave that to Bruce Springsteen. I am doing a show during halftime for you guys. Some of you are going to be bored to tears watching Bruce Springsteen so I am offering an alternative. This should be a lot of fun for everyone. It will be great to all be able to hang out and chat so make sure you tune in and watch. And, hopefully, I will not have a wardrobe malfunction.

The show will be on your Internet. Head to when the teams head for the locker room.

Mentalists, magicians, others weigh in with Super Bowl predictions

Friday, January 30th, 2009

As the big game nears, mentalists, magicians and other magic-related celebrities are giving their predictions about who will win: The Arizona Cardinals or the Pittsburgh Steelers:

  • Penn and Teller’s Penn Gillette was part of a cavalcade of stars in this article. He predicts the Steelers, because “Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has an unbeatable motivation: the NFL promised that if he wins a second Super Bowl, he can put an umlaut on his uniform.”
  • Mike Super and Justin Robert Young hold a half-hour Steelers love-fest on The Phenomenon winner, who hails from Pittsburgh, picked the Steelers to win and cover the seven-point spread — and much more. Baltimore Ravens fans probably shouldn’t listen to this.
  • Patricia Arquette, who plays a serious psychic on Medium, picked the Cardinals AND the Steelers. The character is from Arizona, she said, but the actress has a feeling about Zombietown’s Steelers…
  • As I find them, I’ll update this post, so keep checking back.

An evening with Paul Harris

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

13 people in January received a session of a lifetime after purchasing the product of a lifetime.

Brad Christian, founder of Ellusionist, took these pictures during the dinner at his California home. (Hmm… we see some video cameras in the background of some of these pictures…) And some of the winners of our True Astonishments giveaway have posted their experiences in the Ellusionist forums. Like this guy. And this guy. Said Christian:

I thought the Paul Harris event was amazing. The people: That they would come from so far for this common purpose is quite moving. A lot of insights were gained during the time they spent at my place. Thanks for your dedication guys, and for sharing a piece of yourselves.

Big thanks to Tim Trono, of Murphy’s Magic, and to Paul Harris, who made the night legendary.

Adam Grace: The (second) Ellusionist Interview

Monday, January 26th, 2009

In case you forgot, Adam Grace is a Renaissance man. He’s an actor who has performed on stage, TV and the silver screen. He is a pianist and keyboardist who attended Juilliard and has played with Gary Jules and many others. He’s also a stage and close-up magician who has created a few killer effects.

Maybe you have heard something about his latest effect.

Grace, fresh out of the recording studio with his new band, Truth and Salvage Co., joined us for another podcast to talk about who is producing the new album, how music influences his magic (and not the other way around) and a LOT about Ringtone, his latest effect (including the release date and price). Spoiler: When asked about what tech-savvy spectators might do when speculating how Ringtone works, Grace had this to say: “Good luck.”
